Minimum wage and time
The minimum wage has not kept pace with inflation when looking at nominal wages (not adjusted to inflation) versus their spending power in 2022 figures (adjusted for inflation).
Because the federal minimum wage hasn't changed since 2009, its actual purchasing power has dwindled dramatically. The lower purchasing power means that it's harder for workers to survive on a minimum wage.
State minimum wage
The minimum wage is different for each state. Five states have no minimum wage law, but the federal minimum wage still is applicable to them. They include Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. In certain states, the minimum wage is higher, based on whether a specific city or region within the state has an upper minimum wage.
Does raising the minimum wage cause inflation?
No. The federal minimum wage is determined by the government and does not directly correlate with inflation. The current conditions of inflation were not caused by this minimum wage. It hasn't changed since 2009.
Are all workers paid at least what is considered to be the minimum amount?
The workers who are covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act must be paid at least the federal minimum wage. They can earn higher if the state minimum wage is greater.

Does the minimum wage include tips?
Employees who are tipped include those who depend on tips from customers to supplement their wages. The average tipped employee receives more than $30 per month in tips, according to the Department of Labor.
The employees who receive tips must earn the minimal wage rate of $2.13 for an hour. It is known as a cash wage. That cash wage is combined with tips to achieve the minimum wage in the federal government that is $7.25 for an hour. Those tips are considered a "tip credit," that allows companies to compensate workers less than that federal minimum wage.
Employers may credit up to $5.12 per hour of tips towards a worker's wages. If the wage of an employee (at at least $2.13 for an hour) with tips is less than $7.25 per hour, the employer is required to make up the difference.
The amount of tipping required and the minimum tip credits vary by city, state, and even by.
Washington, D.C., has the highest minimum wage for tipped workers in the country.
