A majority of the products we feature are from our partners who pay us. This impacts the types of products we write about and the location and manner in which the product appears on a page. But, it doesn't influence our evaluations. Our opinions are entirely our own. Here's a list and .

Paycheck advance apps allow users to get a small portion of their earnings typically for a fee and then pay it back when they next pay.
It's a tempting deal if you're in need of cash between paydays And millions of users are taking it up. While it's possible to use these without harming your finances, some consumer advocates believe they can create an unending series of loans.
If you're considering using an app to borrow, here's what to know prior to downloading.
Fees framed as tips
Many cash advance apps ask users if they want to include a tip in exchange for cash. A cash advance app could limit tips to a percent of the loan amount or only let users tip up to a couple of dollars.
Earnin is a cash-advance application that accepts tips. President Ram Palaniappan says tips let users decide what service is worth to them rather than requiring a fee they might not be able to afford.
Certain advances have additional fees. Dave Another paycheck advance application, charges three fees including a $1 monthly subscription fee, an express fee to get your money faster as well as an additional tip.
For just a few hundred dollars -- the maximum amount that you can borrow from most apps The fees aren't as costly as payday loans or overdraft fees.
But asking the user to determine the amount they will pay isn't giving them an opportunity to assess the total costs of borrowing in the way the display of rates for the year could be, according to Marisabel Torres, former director of California policy at the Center for Responsible Lending who is now a vice president for JPMorgan Chase.
"Not declaring it a fee and using it as a tip is really misleading to the customer because then the amount that the product actually costs is confused," she says.

The risks: Overdrafts, persistent borrowing
To sign up for a cash advance app, applicants typically need to submit proof of their pay schedule and income, and often access to their accounts at the bank so that they can access the cash they owe after they are paid.
Certain apps claim that they'll keep track of your bank account and attempt to stop a debit when your balance is too low. Debiting a balance that's too small could trigger an overdraft charge -- a charge that some apps market themselves in the form of a substitute for -which means you may have to take out a loan again.
It's not clear yet what happens when apps are used to trigger an overdraft penalty, says Alex Horowitz, principal officer with The Pew Charitable Trusts.
But a 2021 report from the Financial Health Network found more than 70% of those who used the service to access their earnings early used them again which is a common practice for payday loans, he says.
"It's not only that they're using it several times over the course of a year, it's the fact that they're using it multiple times in a row," Horowitz says. "That means they won't be able to repay it without taking a second advance shortly after to cover their costs."
Not a long-term solution
You may have cheaper when you need to borrow money, Torres says.
Credit unions and some banks offer small-dollar loans that can be repaid in affordable monthly installments. A friend or family member could be able lend you money, and then let you pay it back in time.
There's no enough evidence to determine if an advantage from an app leaves customers better off or worse off, according to Nakita Cuttino Associate Professor of Law of Georgetown University whose research focuses on financial services and inclusion.
When they're used to resolve an emergency situation that is only temporary, Cuttino says, an advance could be less expensive and easier to use -- and reduces the chance of borrowing too much due to their small sums of money.
If you do decide to take out a loan from one of these apps, be aware of the impact on your budget and make a plan to repay it according to her. If you find yourself returning to borrow each month or paying often overdraft charges this might not be the right choice for you.
